Family and friends of Tom Sawyer and Chris Harrison, two soldiers from Watford killed in action in Afghanistan, are undertaking a 100k walk from Richmond Park in London to Brighton Race Course to honour their memory and to raise funds for a range of military charities.

"Team Tom" is captained by Tom’s mum, Sue, and Team Chris is captained by Chris’s dad, Martin.

All team members have pledged to raise as much as they can for charities which mostly support service and ex-service personnel.

Charities chosen to benefit are the Royal Marines Charitable Trust, The Royal British Legion, Combat Stress, Help4Heroes, Diabetes UK and Watford Mencap.

Sue explained: "Apart from one person, the rest of us walkers are all the wrong side of 50 so it really is going to be a challenge but an added incentive is that Tom's Regiment have five lads who have volunteered to come along and support us.

"For us lady walkers at least, that will be incentive enough."

Although the walk does not take place until Sunday, May 24, fundraising has already begun in earnest.

A race night will be held at the Royal British Legion in Croxley Green on Saturday, March 22. Enntrance is by ticket only costing £4.

The event will include a raffle and auction with some great prizes.
