The fire service is launching a new initiative to reduce the number and severity of motorcycle accidents across the county.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) is launching the Biker Down initiative, which is designed for riders of motorcycles, mopeds and scooters, of all ages and experience.

It is a free course which teaches practical skills to help bikers avoid accidents, including teaching essential first-aid and gives advice to bikers that may find themselves first on the scene of a motorcycle collision.

Richard Thake, cabinet member with responsibility for community safety, explained: "Although bikers make up only one percent of motorists, they account for a staggering 20% of those killed and seriously injured on Hertfordshire roads every year.  It is therefore vital that we provide these motorists with the tools they need to avoid road traffic accidents."

Biker Down will be rolled out across Hertfordshire.

Phil Cox - UKIP Mayoral candidate for Watford says...

Good idea.

Everyone should learn essential first aid, it is as important as any school subject yet it is never taught at school.

This is a step in the right direction.

I also know what I would do differently as Mayor. Our manifesto should be on our website next week so please keep an eye out for it. It will explain what we believe needs to change to turn our council into the sort of council people will be proud of.

Where is it Phil?
