A Bushey care home has been told that "action is needed" after it failed six out of nine areas of care.

Bushey House Beaumont, in the High Street, has not met the required standards of care in areas such as respecting and involving people at the home, management of medicine, supporting workers and keeping adequate records, an inspection by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) revealed.

The unannounced inspection on November 1 found that people’s privacy and dignity "may have been compromised" because bedroom doors were left open.

The report also stated that the home did not always obtain people's consent before undertaking care or treatment.

On the day of inspection there were 37 people living at the care home. The home is registered to provide accommodation for people who require nursing or personal care.

The areas of care that were met were the care and welfare of people that use the service, nutritional needs and requirements relating to workers.

However, the inspection report noted that some medication which was stored in the fridge had expired.

When the fridge was checked, it was found that five items of medication had expired.

The report said: "This meant that people were put at increased risk as ‘near misses and incidents’ were not taken on board or addressed as a means to learning and reducing the risk of it happening again in the future."

Inspectors were also concerned about record keeping as some records were not readily available for inspection and could not easily be located when requested.

Another area of concern was obtaining people’s consent - which was not a priority according to staff which meant that people were being supported "without the correct consents being in place".

One person inspectors spoke to told them they felt that staff were not always sure what their needs were.

They said that whist being hoisted by staff in the morning they sometimes got a few 'knocks and bangs'.

Inspectors also viewed the room of a person who had lived at the home for seven years and noted that the carpet in the room was stained and dirty and had not been changed in the seven years they had been at the home.

The CQC said the provider was told to send them a report to make sure that action has been taken to address their concerns.

Orla O'Neill said on behalf of Bushey House: "Since the inspection of Bushey House we have made numerous improvements which have been monitored by the management support team. We took immediate action and submitted an action plan to the CQC which clearly outlined the steps being taken to ensure improvements in our services continue to be achieved and more importantly sustained and embedded into the culture of the home. We would like to reassure everyone of our commitment to provide the highest quality of care to those residing at Bushey House and to emphasise that their health and wellbeing is at the forefront of everything we do and are doing."
