Northwood-based HMS Wildfire will be opening its doors this weekend at part of its drive to encourage people to become a Reservist in the Royal Navy.

On Saturday, an open day will be held at Rickmansworth and Watford Sea Cadets’ base, in Watford Road.

There will be two time slots, one from 10am to 12.30pm and another from 1.30pm to 4pm.

People attending the event will have the opportunity to find out more about life in the Navy by meeting serving Reservists and taking part in physical and mental challenges.

They will also be able to watch demonstrations on weapons handling, firefighting and chemical defence.

New recruits must be aged between 16 and 40, have an appropriate standard in English and Maths, and be able to complete a one-and-a-half-mile run within a set time.

Jobs within the Royal Naval Reserve are varied and include roles in logistics, intelligence, diving, mine warfare, information systems, submarine operations and maritime trade operations.

Commander Stephanie Shinner, commanding officer of HMS Wildfire, said: "Being a member of the Royal Naval Reserve is an excellent way to make a real contribution to the country, whilst gaining additional skills and knowledge.

"Reservists experience the action and adventure of life at sea, and develop new friendships that often last a lifetime. It’s a great way of experiencing life in the Navy without having to give up your day job and, for many people it’s a chance to fulfil long-held ambitions."
