Forget the deciding round of fixtures in the Six Nations Rugby Tournament – the big sporting event in Radlett Road, Watford, at the weekend was the challenge match between the local rugby club and a team of social players from Hertfordshire Constabulary.

The match was just one of the attractions at a fun day organised by community officers and Watford Rugby Club.

Up to 400 people went to the club on Sunday afternoon to witness the home side beating the visiting police by 29 points to 19.

North Watford community sergeant Clare Ramirez, who helped organise the day, said it was a fantastic match with the lead changing hands several times before the home side eventually edged out the visitors.

During the half time interval, crowds were treated to drills by Hertfordshire police cadets.

Man of the match was Watford Rugby Club’s Roger Cook, who was particularly motivated for the game as his father was a Metropolitan Police officer. His efforts won him prizes courtesy of TopGolf.

Rugby aside, police vehicles were on site for children to explore, as were Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service vehicles.

Throughout the day officers mingled with the crowds, offering crime prevention and raise safety advice and handing out flyers about special initiatives, such as their fitting of tamper proof screws on car registration plates to prevent them being stolen.

Volunteers from Youth Connexions were also on hand to sign up young people for their support in moving into further education and employment. There was also a timed tackling competition won by teenager Elliott Screeves who landed himself tickets for Saracens versus Harlequins at Wembley tomorrow (Saturday).

The day was such a success that plans are already in hand to make it an annual event, Ms Ramirez said.
