'V is for Victory' sign raised in Bushey as neighbour feud escalates

Watford Observer: A homeowner signals "victory" in a row with his neighbour over gates. A homeowner signals "victory" in a row with his neighbour over gates.

Council officials are investigating a large banner that has been put up outside a Bushey house to celebrate "victory" in a neighbourly feud.

The banner, which reads "V is for Victory", appeared at the house on the junction between Bournehall Avenue and Bourne Road yesterday afternoon.

A letter stapled next to the banner said it represented the owner of the property sending a message to his neighbour in their dispute over some gates.

The message chronicled the row, which was reported to have been taken to the council and was set to go to a public inquiry.

Hertsmere Borough Council said the case was ongoing and it was unable to comment.

Depending on what the letter says, there will be every chance they lost.
The Public Order Act would cover the sign alone. Swearing in public is illegal, and most people would equate that two fingered salute as that in graphic format.
As the case is still ongoing, intimidating or interfering with witnesses (other neighbours who might be called who have seen the sign) is also a serious criminal offence.
Fly posting is illegal.
And so on.

All in all, an own goal from someone with a very worrying ego problem.

I am the sign owner and this story is not accurate, Watford observer have not spoken to me about this.

This is not a feud and never has been, the case is not ongoing, i put the sign up after several years of hell

Unfortunately a neighbour that i have never spoken to carried out a sustained campaign of complaints against me to Hertsmere Borough Council spanning back several years, as a result I suffered years of investigations from Hertsmere borough council about the use of my private driveway and the installation of these gates.

Sadly after even more pointless complaints I received an enforcement notice in August 2013 forcing me by law to remove my rear gates the tools of trade from my own garage and the rear fence leaving my children free to wander in the road.

I was forced to appeal against this notice which was scheduled for a public inquiry this year and I have had to spend thousands of pounds in legal costs to defend myself and no doubt the council tax payers are footing a large bill as well

However with hard work a great legal team and most importantly the much appreciated support and help from all the good neighbours around me Hertsmere Borough officially withdrew the enforcement notice in March this year.

Ok, we can only go on what we read. But ask yourself this: What is your neighbour going to do?

a) Laugh and admit the better man won.
b) Ignore it and keep quiet in future.
c) Devote the rest of their lives to getting even.

From what you've said, it is going to be c. I think you are just making a rod for your own back. It might feel good now, but spending the next ten years in pointless and petty disputes won't.

The victory sign is usually done the other way around, although I think Churchill did both. But that was in 1944. We all know what it means done that way now. It means **** you, and I for one don't really want that on walls and fences.

Without knowing all the facts and ins-and-outs of the case, it seems to me that the only people who have won here are, yet again, the greedy, rapacious, scumbag lawyers! They must love people like you and your neighbour putting thousands into their pockets in pointless and childish disputes.

Why didn't you simply move when you discovered that your neighbour was an a***hole?

Sorry Roy,

I can't agree that anyone should up sticks and move because a neighbour makes their life a misery! I'm sure 90% of the Country would be moving every year if that was the case. "Fight fire with fire" is what I was taught ...it helps with blood circulation too.

I don't like the "na na nana na" banner! it's the equivalent of "washing your dirty laundry in public".

If accurate the home owner has been through a difficult few years, but I think this sign whilst its sentiments are understandable is a mistake.

It makes them look as petty as their troublesome neighbour and if you're not in the know and happen to see could give the impression that they themselves are the nightmare neighbour.

Signowner, what exactly was your neighbours problem with the fence, gates and tool storage?

Quite possibly on the things I suggested, but I'm sure there is a law that states I cannot be offensive in public, by either word or deed.
If I spray painted 'I'm glad Fred Bloggs is dead' on the front of my house, and his widow had to look out her window and see it everyday, that would surely be illegal even though it is my actual opinion and therefore a fact, and it is on my own house?

Or can I do that? (I hope so, I hated Fred Bloggs).
