Firefighters were called to a bonfire in Leavesden last night after concerns from neighbours that it was getting out of control.
A crew from Garston attended the blaze in the back garden of the Curtiss Drive property after receiving the call at 9.53pm.
Watch commander Andy Newman said the bonfire had been left unattended and that the crew were unable to contact the residents of the property.
Firefighters climbed over the back fence to access the garden after no-one answered the front door.
Mr Newman said: "Somebody had been burning some rubbish in their back garden but they were not there.
"Bonfires must be attended at all times. If they aren’t then we will put it out."
A hose reel was used to extinguish the fire.
