St John Ambulance held its annual Youth Groups First Aid Challenge Day.

The Rickmansworth and Chorleywood unit of the first aid charity invited young people’s groups and organisations in Three Rivers to take part on March 23.

This year’s competition saw a dozen teams, including the Scouts and Girl Guides, taking on a series of challenges to determine who would be awarded the top prizes at the end of the day.

Groups participated in team building exercises and were also faced with different first aid scenarios.

Winning teams and individuals were chosen by a judging panel of St John Ambulance district officers and prizes were awarded at the end of the day by the chair of Three Rivers District Council, Les Mead, St John Ambulance district manager, Brian Heron-Edmends, and the competition's sponsor, Mary Mathieson.

Caroline Pearce, manager of St John Ambulance's Rickmansworth and Chorleywood unit, said: "Our unit has run the Youth Group First Aid Challenge Day since 1980 and the standard of first aid knowledge demonstrated by these young people has been as impressive as ever in 2014.

"This is a great way to get local youth groups working together to learn and practise vital life saving skills which could potentially mean that they are the difference between a life lost and a life saved in the future."
