Watford beat a hugely spirited Plymouth Argyle 1-0 in the sunshine at Villa Park to secure passage to their first FA Cup final.
Argyle had progressed beyond the fifth round for the first time and were struggling in the third division.
A tense game was settled by a 13th-minute goal from centre forward George Reilly, who got the better of his marker and former Cambridge United colleague Lindsay Smith to convert John Barnes' ferocious left-wing cross.
Manager Graham Taylor conceded: "Over the 90 minutes we were fortunate to win."
