The work of volunteer police officers in Hertfordshire is being highlighted as part of a recruitment drive by the county’s force.

Hertfordshire Constabulary said over 190 special officer were on the beat this weekend helping with everything from policing the Watford FC match to catching speeding drivers.

The force also said over the last year Hertfordshire’s Special Constables have made more than 600 arrests and assisted in a further 1,700, dealt with 162 road crashes, taken part in 262 alcohol seizures, conducted 414 breath test, undertaken 2,023 stop and searche, seized 137 vehicles and executed 286 warrants.

Special chief officer David Tewkesbury said: "The idea of the National Specials Weekend is to get as many of the UK’s 18,000 Specials as possible to perform a duty over the weekend.

"Hertfordshire’s 410-strong team of Special Constables are recognised as one of the best performing teams in the UK and last year completed a total of 136,000 duty hours for the force. The support provided by our Special Constables and Rural Special Constables is helping to combat crime and keep Hertfordshire even safer."
