Artwork to celebrate organ donations has been unveiled at Watford General Hospital.

The artwork, designed by Amanda Jones from Buckingham Fine Art and Montagues Gallery in Kings Langley, celebrates the importance of an organ donation in another person’s life.

A flower was used as a symbol of life in the artwork and the petals are shaped as hearts to represent "giving life to other organisms."

The artwork will be displayed in the main reception area of the hospital and more than 40 people attended its unveiling today, including friends and family of people who have donated organs.

In total 1,212 patients donated organs and saved the lives of 3,112 people in the UK in 2012/2013.  Six patients from Watford Hospital donated organs.

Samantha Jones, chief executive of the hospital trust said: "This artwork is our way of saying thank you to all donors and their families.  We also hope that it will increase awareness of the importance of organ donation and to highlight the work of the many organisations that work tirelessly to improve the lives of others.

"One donor can save the lives of several people, and improve the quality of life for many more. The more people who pledge to donate their organs and tissue after their death, the more people stand to benefit.  Organ donation is the greatest gift one person can give to another."
