One of Watford's oldest buildings could be sold off under plans announced by Network Rail this week.

The house at 56 Bedford Street, which was built around 1842, was part of the original complex of Watford Station.

It is believed to form part of either the station master's or signal man's cottage.

The last known tenant, Earnest Cole, a former railway worker, left in November due to ill health.

A Network Rail spokesman said: "We are currently deciding what to with it but one of the options would be to sell it."

She added that the house had been made secure following complaints from residents last week that it had been left in a dilapidated state.
