Crowds are expected to line the streets of Rickmansworth this weekend as Ricky Week returns to celebrate its 60th anniversary.

The popular community event, which is organised by the Rickmansworth Society, will return to the town on Saturday.

Decorated floats will assemble on the southern side of the High Street, between the railway bridge and St Joan of Arc School, at 12.30pm, before the parade moves off to the Bury grounds.

Stalls, a tug-of-war competition, a barbeque and many other attractions will be at the Grand Carnival Fete, organised by the Batchworth Sea Scouts, in the Bury grounds between 1.30pm and 5pm.

Miss Rickmansworth will also be crowded at the carnival by chairman of Three Rivers District Council, Les Mead, at 2pm.

This year’s Miss Rickmansworth and her attendants have been selected from Arnett Hills School, in Berry Lane.

In addition to Saturday’s host of events, there will be activities held throughout the week, until Sunday, May 18.

These include a classic car show in Croxley Green on Sunday, May 11 between 10am and 5pm, and the International 14 Sailing Open Event at Troy Lake on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11.

There will also be an open weekend at Maple Lodge Nature Reserve on Saturday, May 10 and Sunday, May 11, between 11am and 5pm.

Barbara Owen, secretary of the Rickmansworth Society, said the event is still popular in the town as local groups are eager to participate in the week’s activities and show what they have to offer the community.

Mrs Owen said: "We wanted to incorporate a lot of people into the week and a lot of local groups are putting something on. It will be a lovely event and there are so many things planned."

Mrs Owen became involved with the Rickmansworth Society after her mother and father were joint secretaries of the town organisation many years ago.

Speaking about why she feels the event is still so popular in the community, she said: "It’s an important week because so many different people get involved.

"There are lots of people involved in the society and in organising this event, it’s lovely that so many people are working together to make the town important again."

The nine-day Ricky Week concludes with the 21st Rickmansworth Festival on Saturday, May 17 and Sunday, May 18.

Live music, markets, boat trips and Morris dancing will held from 10.30am to 10.30pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday at the Aquadrome.

Organised by the Rickmansworth Waterways Trust, a donation of at least £2 is requested of visitors to the festival.
