A new wifi area in the town centre, spruced up car parks and more taxi ranks are among Mayor Dorothy Thornhill’s promises for the Watford if returned for another term.

The Liberal Democrat mayor is also pledging to try and create a "cafe culture" in The Parade in her manifesto, which was released this week.

Other promises include not raising council tax above inflation and also not bringing in parking controls unless residents want them.

Mayor Thornhill said: "It is a privilege to serve you as Waford’s mayor and I am asking for your support so I can continue working for you and get the best for our town.

"It’s important that Watford continues to be a good place to live and work in and to visit. That means making sure we have a thriving local economy, a high quality environment and efficient public services.

"As mayor I have worked not only to make sure that the borough council gives you value for money, but also to speak up for Watford and make sure the town gets a fair deal from the Government, county council and other bodies.

"This often means working in partnership. The co-operation between the council and the police resulted in significantly cutting crime and antisocial behaviour in the town. Partnership with West Hertfordshire Hospitals Trust has ensured that Watford was chosen as the main hospital for West Herts. The health campus will not only deliver new jobs and homes through regeneration of derelict land, but also the prospect of new hospital facilities when the trust completes is clinical strategy."

On May 22 Mayor Thornhill will run for the top job at town hall for a fourth time after winning the office at ever election since its creation in 2002.

One of the mayor’s key pledges is to establish a "Wifi centre" in the town centre for visitors and businesses.

She is also promising to improve the car parks in the town centre. Last year Watford Council  took control of the Gade, Sutton, and Church car parks as part of the deal with intu over Charter Place.

The manifesto says the Liberal Democrat would also install more taxi ranks in the town and encourage restaurants and bars to apply for pavement licences to create a "cafe culture" in The Parade.

Other pledges include continuing the programme of improving parks, investing in Watford’s allotment sites, to apply for grants to upgrade Watford Museum and to improve the council’s website.
