The deputy head of a Bushey school has raised more than £300 for charity by having his ponytail chopped off.

Charlie Wakeley, who is an assistant head at Immanuel College, held the charity haircutting event during the lunchtime break, to the "loud roars and cheers of staff and students".

Celia Rabstein at the school said: "The audience had to bid, by means of an auction, for the privilege of having a go with the scissors.

"To add to the excitement and ambience, students and teachers then paid to shave his remaining hair. After 15 years, he has finally succumbed to the scissors."

The event will support two charities. The hair will be donated to the Little Princess Trust, where it will be used for making wigs for children who have lost their own hair due to cancer treatment and the money will be used to fund the school’s Manna from Heaven project, which involves making sandwiches for a homeless shelter.

Mr Wakeley said: "It should make a real difference to the lives of some of society’s most vulnerable members, and has provided an opportunity for the students at the college to take part in a very silly event."
