Ten tonnes of compost was given away in Radlett last week to help celebrate international Compost Awareness Week.

Residents were also able to swap their unwanted seeds and tools and receive advice from Hertsmere Borough Council’s recycling officer at Newberries car park.

Recycling officer Gemma Paris said: "We’ve run the compost giveaway for several years now and this year was the most popular, it was great to see so many residents join in. But apologies to anyone who missed out as the compost was all gone before we expected.

"We’d like to say a big thank you to our contractors John O’Conner who helped dish the dirt, and Agrivert who supplied the compost which was made from what residents put in their green bins."

I am sorry to be so juvenile, but I will never cease to giggle at the phrase 'compost awareness week'.
I personally was aware of compost before, but I accept it might be a new concept to some. I will probably remember it long after this commemorative week of celebration too; but there are those who might forget so long may this tradition continue.

You might do many things in your lives folks, or have many things going on. But never, never, forget to be aware of compost.

Just playing devils advocate LSC, but it is international compost awareness week and may just maybe in some far off land some of the locals are not aware of its benefits hence the title (which I agree is slightly unecessary in this country - maybe free compost week would be better?).

Good and interesting that the compost was made from local green bin waste. Thats quite cool in a way

I know Tony, it is just the thought of all these serious faced people sitting around a table discussing compost awareness.
It appeals to my Monty Python side.

If only more nations were aware of compost, perhaps the Middle East would settle down. Ukraine would be sorted. Syria, obviously.
I bet none of them are as compost aware as they could be, and look where it has got them.
