Rooky young chess players have been able to test themselves against their seniors on two Sundays this month.

Ten children took part in a simultaneous display given by Mike Boyce, president of Watford Chess Club, on Sunday, May 11.

The following Sunday club champion Venkat Tiruchirapalli repeated the feat, this time against 11 opponents, all aged between 6 and 13.

Both events formed part of the "Chess for Kids" initiative between the club and The Happy Hour pub, in Eastbury Road, where the games were played.

Organiser Roger Lancaster said: "Sadly, although some very good juniors took part, the adults were even better and won all their games. What the children did gain was experience through playing really strong adult opposition".

The Chess for Kids coaching takes place every Sunday at The Happy Hour between 6pm and 8pm.

The club also has practice sessions for juniors between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on its Tuesday club nights at the Town & Country Club in Rosslyn Road in the town centre.
