A Group of 37 climbers reached the top of Mount Snowdon - at 1,085m the highest mountain in England and Wales - and in doing so raised more than £8,000 for Watford FC’s Community Trust and Watford Mencap.

The team set off from Vicarage Road to Snowdonia on Friday afternoon and had a full day of trekking on Saturday, with money raised to be split 50/50 between these two self-financing and local charities.

Fans and supporters of the Hornets’ Trust and Watford Mencap took part in the challenge, as well as representatives from a number of companies who had supported the effort.

The financial services company RCI Banque, Corona Energy, and John Roberts & Co. estate agency based of Chorleywood and Rickmansworth encouraged their staff to join the event.

Among the participants, Richard Wigfield, a season ticket holder who has been following Watford FC for 40 years, said: "Over the weekend I was exposed to a part of the club that I hadn’t really paid much attention to before.

"I saw an advert on the website for the Watford FC Community Sport and Education Trust, where a series of challenges had been arranged in order to raise funds for the Trust. "I took part in the trek challenge and along with a good number of other people, we scaled the heights of Snowdon. I met people that I hadn’t met before and had a really enjoyable weekend."

Richard called for more of his fellow Hornets supporters to play a part off the pitch: "Surely there must be more like-minded people who could spare a few hours, or a weekend, or offer something that could support the Trust of our beloved club.

"The weekend opened my eyes and I would recommend you visit the Hornets’ Trust site. There’s an awful lot going on that perhaps like me, you weren’t aware of.

"This challenge really did make me realise that there is a charity within the club that could do with more support, and I’m sure there are more season ticket holders and supporters out there who would like to raise awareness and do their bit."

This was just the first of three unique challenges planned by the Trust during 2014. Next up will be the London Nightrider (June 7-8), followed by the London to Amsterdam Cycle (August 1-3).
