A school in Aldenham held D-Day commemorations today with a chapel service focusing on sacrifice and remembering.

Aldenham School on Aldenham Road held the service with the school chaplain, Padre Simon Chapman, speaking about the "enormous contributions" made by a number of past pupils to ensure a successful outcome to the bloody conflict.

The war memorial in the school’s chapel lists 116 names, including Lieutenant Trevor Tooley who lost his life on D-Day itself. He was serving with the 1st Suffolk Regiment that went on to secure a farmhouse, where they dug in before moving out to make contact with the enemy again the following day.

Headmaster James Fowler said: "The school has always had strong associations with the military but it is especially important for us to remember the connections at this particular time."
