A 63-year-old woman from Abbots Langley will be trekking across the Great Wall of China in memory of her mother.

Brenda Lane, of Upper Highway, will be travelling to China in October to take part in a 80 kilometres walk in memory of her mum, Phyl Wheatley, who died from a stroke in July 2012.

So far, she has raised £2457.96 of her £3,000 target and all the money raised will go towards Peace Hospice Care.

Brenda, who has a son and a grand-daughter, will begin her trek on Friday, October 17, and the 60-strong group of walkers are expected to complete the walk on Sunday, October 26.

She said: "It is coming up to two years since I lost my mother and I have become very low and I was looking for a new challenge that could lift my spirits. I just thought, well, if you want a challenge, this is it.

"I know how hard it can be for people, so when this challenge came in, it was the right one at the right time for me.

"It has stopped me from going to work, coming home and being miserable. It was also good because it will raise much needed money for a just cause in the Peace Hospice.

"I just think it is a very good cause which keeps me motivated."

The social worker for Slough Borough Council added: "We had a very close relationship.

When she got ill, and then became more and more ill, I took care of her. I was caring for her until she died in my arms."

The latest leg of Brenda’s fundraising mission will see a charity dinner held at Pin Wei, a Chinese restaurant based along Abbots Langley High Street.

Tickets for the dinner cost £35 and diners will be able to enjoy an "all you can eat buffet" as well as half a bottle of wine and live entertainment. There are 90 tickets for this event.

The 63 year-old added: "I have had lots of support from family and friends and they have made donations.

"I am hoping that if we sell all the tickets, that will see me across my first challenge, which is the fundraising barrier."

Brenda, who also suffers from Fibromyalgia, which is a long term condition that causes pain all over the body, says she is enjoying the training.

She said: "For me, it is very challenging. I am enjoying it, but it does get a bit lonely on the walk.

"There are 60 of us who are taking part in this challenge. There are organised walks, but it is just fitting it in with family and all the other things you have to do.

"I am hoping to meet with some more of the walkers and start getting out there with the group."
