Commonwealth and European Gold Medalist Adam Whitehead will be among the guests at a charity swimming gala at Everyone Active’s Watford Leisure Centre Woodside tomorrow.
Up to 120 youngsters from across the South East will take part in the event which will raise funds and awareness for Anthony Nolan Trust, the stem cell transplant charity.
Everyone Active’s Swim Managers organised the gala to promote competitive swimming and show support for their colleague Chris Spencer, who underwent a bone marrow transplant after being diagnosed with leukemia in June 2013.
Participants, who are all enrolled on swimming lessons at Everyone Active centres, will be separated into groups depending on their ability and each swimmer will compete in a 25 metre front crawl race.
Swimmers and spectators will be encouraged to donate to the trust through charity buckets and by purchasing a programme.
A raffle will also be held for a month’s free gym membership, three months’ worth of swimming lessons, family swimming vouchers and more.
Regional Swimming Development Manager Alison Sutherland said: "We’re really looking forward to the event and raising funds for the Anthony Nolan Trust.
"The swimmers have worked really hard during their lessons in preparation and it will be a joy to see them put their skills into practice while raising much needed funds for charity.
"I have no doubt the children will be inspired by Adam Whitehead attending and cheering them on. He will also be awarding medals and an overall winner’s trophy."
