Pupils at Bromet Primary School celebrated the opening of a new irrigation system for their fruit and veg garden this week.

The garden has been run for more than five years by local volunteers who have been passing on Grow Your Own skills to the 270 Bromet primary pupils.

Get Set Grow, the voluntary group behind the garden, realised they could harvest rainwater in the winter and use it to irrigate the crops via a leaky pipe in the summer.

Hertfordshire County Council, along with Watford Borough Council, enabled the scheme by funding the purchase of a large water butt and pipes, which should keep the school's plants well hydrated all summer.

Watford Mayor Dorothy Thornhill and MP Richard Harrington were also at the garden for the system's official opening.

Watford Cycle Hub set up two bicycles, so that children can pump water from the 5,000 litre water tank onto the growing crops, and learn engineering skills in the process.
