Watford Observer: Six-year-old Lara Fernandes-Pontes from South Oxhey dies after road accident Six-year-old Lara Fernandes-Pontes from South Oxhey dies after road accident

The six-year-old girl who died following a road traffic collision in South Oxhey yesterday afternoon has been named as Lara Fernandes-Pontes.

The incident happened at about 3pm in Hayling Road and involved a collision with a Land Rover Discovery.

Lara was taken to hospital where she sadly died. The family, who live in South Oxhey, have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

Police are investigating the circumstances of the collision and are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

Sergeant Chris Kent said: "This is a tragic loss of a young life in these circumstances. The family are being supported by specialist officers at this difficult time.

"The driver and the occupants of the vehicle were unharmed but obviously shaken by what happened.

"At the moment we are investigating the circumstances of the collision and whilst we have spoken to a number of people at the scene, we’d be keen to hear from anyone who witnessed what happened and has not yet spoken to officers."

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Rupert Gadd via Hertfordshire Constabulary’s non-emergency number 101, citing reference ISR 449 of July 13.

Tragic loss of life, my heart goes out to the family.

That road is a rat-run, we have been asking for traffic calming measures for years only to be told that we are not a priority.
That may change now after the accident but it is disgusting that it takes something like this to get things done.

A tragic story and no parents should have to go through this. One cannot imagine how you cope with something like this.

As there is no official word as to whether speeding was involved and no specifics of the accident, spare a thought for the driver as well.

I wonder if this was an occasion when a child ran across the road without looking, what a terrible thing for a driver to have to live with for the rest of their lives if this was the case!

Only the other day in Hatfield, children were running across the road in front of cars, standing in the road and running to the pavement at the last minute. Luckily a 20mph road but also a rat-run and a bus route! The parents need to educate their children in the dangers of being near a road. The children couldn't have been more than 10 years old.

It's seems the national papers have a lot more details than WO. It does appear she did run across the road.

The driver of that car felt all protected and safe? BIG cars like those people carriers / Chelsea tractors are so much more deadly in a crash no matter who's at fault.
My heart goes out to the family of the girl. jeez what a tragic loss.

you can't blame the size of the car when the child was at fault. Chelsea tractor or not, the driver appears to be blameless & so is the vehicle according to at least one national paper. It could just as easily have been any one of us driving a Fiat 500.

Parents need to teach their children how to cross the road from a young age, as we were back in the late 60's & 70's or they run the risk of a tragedy such as this.

My condolences to the family of the child, and my sympathies to the occupants of the vehicle!

Presumably this is the same lord that allows this sort of thing to happen?

Kids can be unpredictable, cars can be dangerous.

My thoughts are with the family and the driver at what can only be the most traumatic and tragic event anyone can ever go through.

Don't think remarks like that can help anybody at such a tragic time like this.
