Plans for a new motel in Kings Langley would encroach on Green Belt land, according to a local councillor.

The site in Station Road, opposatire the train station, has been earmarked for a new 30-bedroom motel.

Under proposals put forward by Mr E Putman, the existing buildings on the 37-acre site will be demolished to make way for the new motel, which will also have a dining room and kitchen.

Liberal Democrat councillor Keith Williams  said: "We welcome the idea of a motel but we are concerned about the encroachment into Green Belt land at this particular site.

"As local members, we are putting our views to Three Rivers District Council.

"As councillors, we are trying to protect green belt land. We have had a lot of developments used for housing, particularly in Abbots Langley, we had one in Garston. We do not want to lose any more land.

"I can’t really predict [what is going to happen] but I am going to oppose it."

At present, there is a house, mobile home, garage and dozens of vehicles on the site. The land has been used for the "distribution, servicing and repair" of vehicles, but if Three Rivers District Council approves these plans, permission to carry out such work will stop.

However, the number of parking spaces is set to be cut with the number falling from 50 spaces to 44 with an additional 10 for disabled spaces and motorcycles.

Ten jobs will be created, with six members of staff working at the new motel full-time.

Councillor Williams added: "This is another reason why we welcome a hotel in the area, just not this location."

In a planning statement submitted to Three Rivers Council, the site is described as "an ideal location for such accommodation."

It also said: "Research has shown that there is a distinct lack of any accommodation in the form a Travel Lodge, Holiday Day Inn, etc, within Kings Langley or the surrounding vicinity for either business people travelling in the area or for visitors to the West Herts College and even visitors from outside the area wishing to go to the Harry Potter Theme Park at Leavesden."

Three Rivers District Council will have the final decision on whether a new motel is built opposite Kings Langley station and it is expected that the plans will be put before the Planning Committee in August.
