A headteacher has paid tribute to a “delightful” six-year-old who died after being knocked down by a car in South Oxhey on Sunday.

Lara Fernandes-Pontes suffered fatal injuries which she sustained after leaving a friend’s birthday party in Hayling Road at about 3pm.

The pupil, of Hillside Infant School, Northwood, died at Watford General Hospital after being hit by the Land Rover Discovery.

Hundreds of flowers, teddy bears and candles have been laid at the scene where the tragedy happened.

This week her headteacher Chris Drake said the Year 2 pupil would be remembered for her “smile, her enthusiasm and her kindness”.

Mr Drake said: “Lara was a delightful child who will be greatly missed by all members of the school community.

“She will always be remembered for her smile, her enthusiasm and her kindness. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lara’s family and friends at this terrible time.”

Support is being given to pupils, staff and parents at the school.

Homemade cards from Lara’s friends and classmates have been left at the scene, along with balloons, lanterns and drawings.

The police are investigating the accident and no arrests have been made.

Hertfordshire Constabulary is still appealing for information about the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Rupert Gadd on 101, citing reference ISR 449 of July 13.
