Bosses of a budget supermarket remain "committed" to building a new Lidl store in Rickmansworth.

The former Rickmansworth Police Station, in Rectory Road, has been demolished and Lidl have their sights set on turning the land into a major discount food retailer.

A controversial application was thrown out by Three Rivers District Council last year after hundreds petitioned against the development.

Yet Lidl said they are eager to push ahead with plans to open a new supermarket due to the public support for the scheme.

Alasdair Fowle, Lidl spokesman, said: "Due to the overwhelmingly positive support from the local community, we remain committed to opening a new Lidl store in Rickmansworth.

"We are currently exploring all our options and will provide further information in the near future."

No application has yet been submitted to the district council.
