After collecting the awards on Sunday, Ms Cardoso hopes that this success will be the start of a modelling career that coincides with her dancing.

She said: "I wanted to do something a little bit different.

"Afterwards, I was approached by a modelling agency, models of diversity, and I will be at an event on Monday, August, 4 at the RAG Factory.

"Hopefully I will be able to do some modelling shoots in magazines so hopefully it will be the next step. I am really excited about the whole thing."

The mother of two also praised the influence her husband has had. She said: "He keeps pushing me and he has been supporting me throughout and is the backbone of the whole thing."

The event describes itself on its website as a "new annual beauty pageant targeted at females aged between 18-55 years who are a size 10 and over. This new exciting contest has been created to attempt to banish the ‘thin is in’ ideas and attract healthy girls and women."

The Johannesburg born dancer said the moment she won the awards were a complete "shock" and revealed the support she has received from her friends and family.

She said: "It was a complete shock. I was excited and shocked at the same time. It was a wonderful feeling."

"We were there from eleven in the morning and it finished ten, half ten that night.

"We have not stopped celebrating, we have been out for supper and we have had friends over, it has been great fun.

"They are really excited for me. We have had a lot of good luck messages from everyone."
