Couple who met in Oxhey bingo hall celebrate 50 year anniversary

A couple who met and married in Watford in 1964 are set to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary next month.

Marie and Tony Lines met at a bingo night in Oxhey. Tony saw Marie across the hall and decided to ask her out, he went to the toilets where Marie was in the queue and popped the question.

They married on September 6, 1964, at the register office in Clarendon Road.

Both grew up in South Oxhey. Tony, who lived in Glencorse Green , went to nursery in Bushey, followed by Oxhey Wood School in Warren Dell and then Clarendon Secondary Modern.

Marie came from Langley Bucks and moved to Matlock Crescent in Oxhey after finishing her schooling period. At the time of meeting, Marie worked at a blouse factory in Station Road while Tony worked at a weaver to wearer tailor.

Now grandparents to Sarah and Lauren, and great-grandparents to little Leo, the couple still enjoy going to bingo together.

In Watford, Tony previously worked at WH Smiths, Selgrove Jewellers and Clements for nine years.
He got a job in Fishburn Inks after he met Marie and they had their first child, daughter Heidi.

Five years later son Jason was born and the family moved to Welwyn Garden City.

Marie and Tony got jobs with Poppers Print.  Marie worked on the gluer, and Tony worked on the cutter/creaser.

Tony then went to Smith Kline for nine years, followed by a stint working security for MOD. Marie worked for Help The Aged.

The Lines bought a bungalow in Hitchin and are both now enjoying their retirement.

Marie and Tony play Mecca Bingo, Gala Bingo and various other bingo clubs up and down the country. Tony’s hobbies include karaoke, magic and driving, while Marie enjoys knitting, reading and driving. 

They will be celebrating their golden wedding anniversary on September 6 with a meal at the Novotel on A1M junction 7 Stevenage.
