A Bushey biker battled torrential rain to cycle 100 miles for charity.

David Shafier was one of thousands to endure the tumultuous weather on Sunday, August 10, in the gruelling RideLondon cycle ride.

Mr Shafier completed the 100-mile ride on behalf of international development charity World Jewish Relief, which is an organisation that helps vulnerable communities living in poverty across the world.

The ride took more than five hours to complete and Mr Shafier set himself the target of raising £500 for the charity.

The cyclist set off from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, travelling through central London to Surrey before heading back to the finish along The Mall.

The remnants of Hurricane Bertha caused havoc for cyclists on Sunday, forcing the organisers to alter the due to flooding.

Yet this did not dampen Mr Shafier’s spirits, who said the wet weather made the ride more fun. He is already planning next year’s cycle.

He said: "I particularly enjoyed cycling through a flooded tunnel. I can’t wait to do it again next year with better weather to raise money for such a good cause."

Prudential RideLondon was developed by the Mayor of London and is a festival of cycling which takes place on Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10.

This closed-road event is one of the most popular in the capital and attracts thousands of people.

The route features many of the capital’s landmarks, as well as Surrey’s idyllic rural roads.

Tumultuous weather this year meant that cyclists had to endure rain and winds to complete the attractive course.

Mr Shafier said the experience was worth it to raise money for the worthy cause.

The money that Mr Shafier raised will go to support people with disabilities in Ukraine where World Jewish Relief is funding the construction of ramps and platforms in Kharkov, eastern Ukraine.

Despite the political turmoil, the charity hopes to transform the city centre to make it completely accessible for those with disabilities.
