An elderly man had to be freed from his car after a five-vehicle smash in Watford ended with one car on top of another and damage to a lamp post.
Three fire engines from Watford, Garston and St Albans, a road ambulance and police raced to Nascot Wood Road at 1pm on Sunday after numerous people rang for help.
The elderly man was treated at the scene by paramedics for a knee injury but did not want to be transported to hospital.
The ambulance crew also attended to a number of walking wounded.
Dan Atkinson, spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary, said: "Two vehicles were involved in a collision, with one car ending up on top of another on the pavement.
"One person was trapped. In total, five cars were damaged and a lamp post in the road. The Highways Agency was called to make sure the lamp post was safe.
"The scene was re-opened by 3.45pm."
