A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of Aqeel Khan.

At St Albans Youth Court in this morning the teenager, from Watford, appeared expressionless in the dock after being brought up from the cells.

He has been in custody since being arrested at the weekend in connection with the fatal stabbing of Aqeel, 18, on Friday in West Watford.

During the brief hearing, court chair Mrs A Tadiello addressed the boy with the charges.

She said: "You have been charged with murder, which can only be dealt with in the Crown Court. Your case has been sent to Crown Court in St Albans. You will appear there."

The boy, who was wearing a plain blue sweatshirt, answered "yes" and nodded when the magistrate asked if he understood.

He was remanded in custody to reappear before the court on September 10.
