Traffic delays are expected in Watford close to the Intu Watford shopping centre as a result of two incidents police were called to during the early hours of this morning.

Road closures have been put in place in Gladstone Road and Queens Road while police carry out investigations.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible as delays are expected.

Police were called to the first incident in Gladstone Road at approximately 2.35am following reports of two car fires.

On arrival at the scene they found another car alight.

Herts Fire and Rescue were also called and the fires put out. The fires are currently being treated as suspicious. No one was injured.

Police were called to the second incident at approximately 2.40am following reports of a break-in at the Intu Centre.

Offenders had forced their way into the centre via shoe shop Gordon Scott.

Once inside the building, they forced their way into the shop front of Beaverbrooks, Ernest Jones and Swag and stole jewellery and watches before leaving the scene via Gordon Scott.

As a result of this break in, a section of the lower floor of the Intu Centre will remain closed off while police carry out their investigations.

Four men wearing dark clothing and balaclavas were seen to leave the building and make off in an unknown direction.

At the moment police are not ruling out that the two incidents could be linked.

Anyone with information relating to these incidents or who may have seen any suspicious behaviour in the areas are asked to contact police as soon as possible via the non-emergency number 101.

Police are questioning Bob the Baboon about the new Rolex He is now wearing. In six months time the police will release some blurred CCTV images of four men and a monkey asking if we can identify them.

Surely one of the easier crimes for the police in Watford to solve - Queens Road and Queens Place both have CCTV cameras on them, and I'm sure that the people breaking into inTu must have been captured on numerous cameras there too.

I'd say - if on foot - inTu Watford / underpass / Queens Road - first fire / Queens Place - second fire....then either into Gladstone/Grosvenor/
Stanley Road, or down the stairs by the railway line and away.

Suggesting there maybe a link between the two incidents 5 minutes apart is great Police work!

Be interesting to know exactly what time the alarm went off and how long the police took as the burglars got quite a lot done!

And is there no night-time Intu security?

The security in the shopping centre must be pretty rubbish if they had time to rob 3 different shops. Surely the alarm must have Police response and would have activated immediately after somebody entered!

So Intu charges high rates, rents to companies to have their business inside Intu shopping malls but security is rubbish. If a gang has manage to brake in and rob the place. Then we know where the money doesn't go.

Though it was a bit of a slow response from the emergency services last night, took 15mins until police arrived & another 5mins until the fire crew appeared, Must of been on their tea brakes.
