A family from Portsmouth, who contacted the Bushey First World War Commemoration Project, were thrilled to find their research of a soldier displayed at the recent exhibition, "A Village Remembers", at The Bushey Academy. 

Jan England, whose grandfather, Corporal Alfred Waldron, a landscape gardener of 119 School Lane, Bushey, was killed in action in France in October 1918, sent the project organiser photographs and documents charting his life. 

Affectionate embroidered cards that Alfred posted to his wife from the Western Front, a birthday card for his daughter, Barbara, and a photograph of the three of them together were all on display. 

Jan’s daughter, Caroline, who also lives in Bushey, has recently given birth to baby Holly Louise Stevens, so a photograph was taken, capturing five generations of the family, together with Jan’s husband, Stewart, who did the research.

The exhibition, "A Village Remembers", attracted 3,100 visitors and closed on Sunday, August 24, but the visitors’ book contained hundreds of unanimously positive comments and news of the exhibition’s quality and impact was still spreading.

The exhibition will be re-launched in mid-September in the Church House Gallery at St James’s Parish Church, Bushey, next to the pond.
