The streets of Bushey were swept clean by council staff and fast food chain workers who were out in force clearing the area of rubbish.

A litter pick was organised by Hertsmere Borough Council and McDonald’s as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Love Where You Live Campaign.

The group, which included someone dressed as a banana, used council litter pickers and sacks to tackle litter around the A41 Elton Way, Hartspring Lane including the petrol station and Costco as well as Bushey Mill Lane and Sandy Lane last Saturday.

Councillor Jean Heywood, environment portfolio holder, said: "It’s great to see McDonald’s take some responsibility for the litter around their premises but at the end of the day it’s down to the public to help keep our streets clean.

"Dropping litter anywhere on the ground or from your car is disgusting as well as illegal and if you’re caught you could be fined £75."

Dhanish Audit, Business Manager at McDonald’s, Bushey, said: "The Love Where You Live event was a great success. We had a good turnout from our McDonald’s crew and a few local residents came along too.

"We spent about three hours picking up rubbish and it was great to see a community spirit develop in the group, everyone had fun. We are very proactive with our work in the community and always want to do events like this to help improve the local area."

Councillor Heywood added: "Local authorities throughout England spend around £1billion of council tax payers’ money on clearing up litter every year, so next time you are about to drop a crisp packet, cigarette butt or burger wrapper, think twice and take pride in where you live."

If you are interested in organising a community clean-up we can help you with guidance and litter picking equipment such as gloves, litter pickers, sacks and high visibility vests.
