A dementia activity co-ordinator at Watford General Hospital has been presented with a celebrating excellence staff award by the chief executive of West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust.

Jeremy Ruppersburg's job involves using specialist techniques to help patients with dementia keep active and independent, including supporting them to maintain pre-existing hobbies and other leisure activities.

One of Jeremy's nominators said: "He makes it his business to know everything about each patient. He often knows why they are happy or sad at different times of day, and the best way to cheer them up or to entertain them.

"When they are agitated he is often the best person to calm them down, and he is invaluable as a liason between patients and their families and friends."

Jeremy’s recent work has included helping to open a garden for patients who are staying on Bluebell ward, the dedicated ward for patients with dementia, to offer a space for patients to enjoy peace and quiet which can help to ease anxiety and support them in being independent.

Jeremy said: "I am really pleased to have been nominated for this award. I would like to thank all of the people that voted for me."

He was presented with his award and a £50 John Lewis voucher by trust chief executive, Samantha Jones.

She said: "Jeremy is a key member of our care of the elderly team helping to support patients living with dementia. He always goes above and beyond his role.

"Jeremy’s commitment to his job and the work he does are fully deserving of widespread recognition."
