Residents at an "accident hotspot blind junction" in Bushey say it’s only a matter of time before a school child gets knocked down.

Karen George said the "poor state of repair" - including a road sign hidden behind an overgrown tree - in Little Bushey Lane, at the junction with Chiltern Avenue, poses a danger to school children.

She said the thoroughfare is exceptionally busy at school times as pupils from three schools in the area use the road as a walk through, but cars coming out of Chiltern Avenue cannot see it is a junction and some fail to stop.

Mrs George, who lives on the corner of Little Bushey Lane and Chiltern Avenue, said: "The junction continues to be an accident hotspot and yet again the other Saturday night police and ambulance were called to yet another accident where a car coming up Chiltern Avenue was unaware of the junction and crashed straight into a car coming up Little Bushey Lane before ending up in a neighbour’s garden.

"With children starting back at school it is only a matter of time before one of these cars not aware of the junction collides with a child walking up or down the hill to school."

Emergency services were called to the junction shortly before 1am on Saturday, August 30, to a two vehicle collision.

A woman was treated at the scene after she suffered slight injury in the crash between a black Ford Fiesta and Black Audi A4.

Mrs George continued that the state of disrepair of the road calming measures, including speed bumps, on Little Bushey Lane add to the risk of accident.

She said: "The road is a busy thoroughfare for local children and serves three local schools.

"We have broken lamposts and obelisks which pose a danger to children walking by.

"We have speed bumps that are in such a poor state of repair they serve only to pose a danger to cyclists not to calm traffic."

Bushey Heath councillor Seamus Quilty said: "A local resident contacted me recently and I arranged a meeting with the Highways engineers hoping to resolve the matter."

Tom Ship, spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council, said: "We are concerned when any collisions occur on Hertfordshire’s road network.

"The council’s road safety engineering specialists consider all reported personal injury collisions on an annual basis. We then prioritise works that could reduce the potential for future collisions according to concentrations of reported incidents.

"Before the recent collision, there have been two personal injury collisions in the past five years at the Little Bushey Lane junction with Chiltern Avenue, both of which occurred in 2011.

"At this stage, we do not have plans to undertake any road safety engineering investigation or physical works for Little Bushey Lane."
