Crowds of people took advantage of the sunshine on Sunday and gathered at Fishers Field in Bushey for a free picnic.

More than 300 people turned out for the annual event, which was organised by Friends of Fishers Field, the Countryside Management Service and Hertsmere Borough Council.

Visitors enjoyed a go in a police car, demonstrations by the bat association and got to learn about the new bee hives in Fishers Field Nature Reserve.

Further activities included bird box making, a visit from Molly the Fox of Animal Rescue and a demonstration by Bushey-based master blacksmith and chairman of the Friends of Fisher Fields, Steve Rook.

From noon until 3pm, guests enjoyed sandwiches, homemade cakes and soft drinks, courtesy of the organisers.

Betty McBean, chairman of Friends of Fishers Field, said: "The picnic went extremely well. It was a wonderful sunny day, we think about 300 people came along - there certainly was a lot of people this year.

"It was very much a family and community event.

"We had the bat association there, and our bee keepers who showed off the new hives.

"This event has been going for about 10 years now, it's always a good day out."
