Part of a central Watford road was closed this afternoon following a suspected gas leak.
Firefighters and police were called to Water Lane at 3pm following concerns that contractors working in someone's garden had damaged an underground gas pipe.
Andrew Dawson, spokesman for Hertfordshire County Council, said: “It looks like the call came in to suggest that someone had dug through a gas line while they were doing some gardening.”
The emergency services rushed to the scene to close off the street as concerns rose there could be a gas leak.
As investigations were carried out by National Grid engineers, it became clear that damage had been caused to a gas main which ran from the road to someone's property.
National Grid engineers are on the scene repairing the damaged pipe.
The road closure has been lifted.
