THE Liberal Democrats in Watford have selected Mayor Dorothy Thornhill as the party's prospective parliamentary candidate in next year's General Election.

The choice was made following a hustings on Friday at which candidates stated why they should be chosen to fight the three-way marginal held by Conservative Richard Harrington.

The decision was welcomed by Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron, who tweeted: "I'm over the moon that Watford #Lib Dems have selected @MayorDorothy as our PPC for 2015. She will be a brilliant MP and community champion."

Dorothy Thornhill was re-elected Mayor of Watford in May this year and is currently in her fourth term of office.

Right up the the husting event, Mayor Thornhill consistently refused to publicly state whether she wanted to stand as the party's prospective parliamentary candidate in the next General Election, which will be held in May next year.
