Scholarships to help budding singers improve their vocal talents are being offered by a Watford church.

St John’s Church has launched the scheme, which offers up to £200 for youngsters over 14 to use on music lessons to boost their chances of securing a choral scholarship at university college chapels.

The Sutton Road-based church is offering eight scholarships for the 2014-2015 school year. Auditions will be held in the coming weeks.

David Stevenson, Vicar at St John's, said: "Music is an integral part of St John's, whether in the wonderful hymn singing, choral music and organ accompaniments during our weekly Sunday services, or in concerts taking place throughout the year.

"It is an immensely powerful medium, and strengthening the church's musical offering is a key goal for us over the coming years."
