A wartime couple from Croxley Green have celebrated 70 years of marriage.

Don and Audrey Pain were introduced by a mutual friend at their place of work, The Osram Lamp Works in north Wembley, during World War Two.

Audrey, 89, said the pair didn't get off to the best start.

She said: "A friend of mine said that she wasn’t interested because she already had someone, but she told Don she had a friend who might be interested.

"When we met I asked him if he liked swimming and he said no, so I thought now that’s it you’ve had it.

"But we just carried on and we were engaged for about 18 months."

The couple enjoyed dancing at various other venues including the Hammersmith Palais and they soon developed a love for ice skating and ice hockey.

Audrey said it was through ice hockey that the pair came to try peanut butter - which they both still like today.

She said: "Don and I were married at St Johns Church in Wembley, trying to ignore the occasional explosion from V2 bombs known at the time as Hitler’s rockets."

She continued: "I was 19 when we got married. We have just grown up together and become one."

Don, 94, suffered a stroke in 2010 but keeps very cheerful, a fan of Gardener’s World, animal and nature programmes and listening to music on his iPad.

The couple have one daughter, Linda, and now enjoy entertaining their four great-grandchildren.

Audrey’s hobbies include cooking, knitting, flower arranging and she is an avid reader.

She has a lot of fun with her computer and does all her shopping online. She likes to look things up, write documents and has for some time been trying to get some of her memories written down.

Audrey said: "At 89 and 94 respectively we are still enjoying each other’s company.

"Not bad for 70 years - and they said it wouldn’t last."
