In your leading article, you express the opinion that it is doubtful whether the derivation of the name Watford will ever be solved.
Surely Watford speaks for itself – the ford where the Wat, ancient name for a hare, crosses.
Such a ford would have to be fairly narrow and the adjoining land dry and one visualises such a ford at the bottom of High Street and the high open hillside of Oxhey would be a favourite ground for hares as similar ground is today away from the towns.
