A man in his 60s is "seriously ill" after sustaining a serious arm injury in a crash in Carpenders Park yesterday.

The driver, from Harrow, was taken to St George’s Hospital in Wimbledon after colliding with a lampost in Oxhey Lane at about 3.20pm.

Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue had to free the man after he became trapped in the BMW 3 series.

However, Hertfordshire Constabulary said they are unsure about the exact circumstances of the crash and are appealing for witnesses to help with their investigation.

The road was closed for five hours while officers investigated the scene and recovered the vehicle.

Sarah Spence, spokesman for Hertfordshire Constabulary said: "The incident occurred at around 3.20pm on the A4008 Oxhey Lane, just south of By-the-Wood, when a blue BMW 3 series, for reasons unknown at this stage, left the carriageway and collided with a lamp post.

"He was taken to a hospital in London where he remains seriously ill."

Anyone who was in the area at the time and saw what happened or anyone who believes they may have seen this vehicle prior to the collision is asked to contact PC Jackie Lister via the Herts Police non-emergency number 101.
