A Watford charity that helps disabled people get into employment has received a £10,000 donation from one of the town's housing associations.

Watford Workshop, based at Century Retail Park, received the cash boost from Watford Community Housing Trust's Community Development Fund.

The charity, which offers work experience, skills training and employment to disabled people, said it will spend the money on providing literacy and numeracy training for adults with learning difficulties.

Gordon Sellers, chairman of Watford Workshop, said: "Everyone at our 2013 Christmas Party was inspired by the reading of a short story by one of its four authors, and by the short play presented by about a dozen of our people. Both the story and the play were the result of literacy classes for people with learning difficulties.

"The literacy and numeracy classes, which were supported by the Big Lottery Fund over the past 12 months, make such a difference to their self-confidence and give them the skills to be as independent as possible in the community.

"The new funding will allow us to continue the literacy and numeracy classes for the next 12 months and we would like to thank Watford Community Housing Trust for this donation."

Euan Barr, head of New Business at Watford Community Housing Trust, said: "The Trust is committed to the benefits of social enterprise, and we are very pleased to be supporting the Workshop in the life opportunities it provides in the heart of our community. Watford Workshop must be one of the most long established social enterprises in Watford and we hope we can continue to work together in future."
