Hertsmere Borough Council’s house building plans will get a boost thanks to a new grant of £40,000.
The money will come from a £3 million fund set aside by the Department of Local Government and Security, for creating new homes across the country.
Housing minister Brandon Lewis said it would "get spades in the ground".
He added: "The money will help councils clear the way for builders to get on site and get work underway quickly, providing families with new homes and boosting local businesses and jobs."
A proposed 15 year target of 3,990 new homes reflects the requirements of the East of England Plan and seeks to focus this on previously developed sites.
