Get your skates on as Watford's first ever outdoor ice rink will be set up in The Parade this festive seaon.

The Big Skate rink, part of the ongoing Big Events series organised throughout the year by Watford Borough Council, will measure 25 metres by 15 metres.

Its surface will be made of real ice and the festive focal point is set to be placed by the town's Christmas tree.

Tickets are available now, with prices including the hire of ice skates.

People are welcome to turn up and take a spin on the ice, though it’s advisable to pre-book a session to avoid having to wait.

Sessions on the ice last for 45 minutes and all ages can take to the rink.

Elected Mayor, Dorothy Thornhill, said: "Residents have been asking me for years, ‘why cant we have an ice rink?' The answer was that we didn't have the space, but we do now.

"Its years since I tottered round a rink but I’m certainly going to have a go.

"Having an ice rink in Watford means families can enjoy this classic wintertime activity without having to make an expensive trip into London.

"I hope to see office parties starting their night with teams taking a spin on the ice and it will make a great diversion for Christmas shoppers."

The Big Skate ice rink will open on Saturday, November 22, and runs through to Sunday, January 4, 2015. It will be closed on Christmas Day but open on Boxing Day.

Prices start at £5 and a family of four can skate for £20. For children and nervous skaters there will be skating aids available.
