Most people who have broken their leg would be sitting at home with their feet up - but not 15-year-old Joel Carlowe.

The teenager raced with a broken leg - cast and all - to raise £550 money for Bushey-based charity the Michael Green Foundation.

Joel took part in his school's annual cross country race at Aldenham Country Park, on Thursday last week. He completed the one and-a-half mile race in 50 minutes on his crutches.

He said: "The race went well. When I finished there was a guard of honour and I felt a great sense of achievement. And with all the cheering at the end, I almost forgot how sore my hands were."

Joel, who goes to the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boy’s School, broke his leg while playing rugby.

Joel's Dad, Richard, was with his son throughout the race, assisting him. He said: "I am very proud of Joel. He did really well, he was struggling at one point, but he kept on going."

He said: "Michael Green was my dad's best friend, who died from a silent heart attack, which is related to having diabetes.

"I have been to a few events by the charity and I felt quite strongly about it, and emotional and wanted to do something for them. I would like to thank everyone who has supported me.

"This is the first charity thing I have done by myself and I would definitely do something again in the future. But my aim now is to get off the crutches."
