Hospital staff have been inundated after appealing to former patients to return walking aids borrowed from Watford General but not taken back when they were no longer needed.

Michelle O’Grady, senior sister for children’s A&E at Watford, said: "Thanks to a successful public appeal, and the enthusiasm and commitment of staff across our hospitals and in the community, many of our walking aids have been returned, helping us to save money and reduce waste.

"During September, we had 119 walking aids returned compared to just 41 in August -that’s almost a 200 per cent increase.

"Thank you to everyone, including our local press, for contributing to the success of our appeal.

"We’re delighted with the support we’ve received and we hope that the public will continue to return any hospital property they have on temporary loan, which is no longer required."

Patients can still return walking aids or other borrowed equipment supplied to them by taking them back to the department from which they were initially borrowed.
