Hundreds of young fun seekers flocked to the Red Lion in Kings Langley at the invitation of a new canal boating organisation.

Launched this summer, Waterways Experiences (WEXP), a charity run by volunteers, promotes accessible canal boating for everyone. People can go and learn how to steer a canal boat and work the locks along the Grand Union Canal.

The Fun Day, which included outdoor barbecue, bouncy castle and selection of charity stalls, also offered short taster trips on all three of the organisation's boats.

Graham Danbury, chairman and one of the founding trustees of the organisation, said: "It was a great opportunity for us to show off what we've achieved since opening for business.

"It's hard work operating on a purely volunteer basis but such is the enthusiasm amongst local people for their canal and our boats that in our first fifteen weeks of operation we ran some 80 trips, and were enjoyed by over 900 people. Just over half of the trips were for our priority groups of people with various special needs.

"This, and the amazing results of Fun Day's fundraising programme, is giving us renewed confidence for the future of this long-cherished local facility."

WEXP was formed in the early Spring of 2014 by a group of volunteers with the former operator ReachoutPlus.
