Police were called to Queen's Road yesterday evening following reports of a man being assaulted with bottles stolen from a food shop.

A man was getting into his van, which was parked in the road, at about 5.10pm when he was involved in an argument with the occupants of another vehicle that stopped in the road.

Police said the occupants of the vehicle assaulted the man before they, and possibly other men not involved in the original altercation, stole bottles from the Queens Food and Wine store and assaulted the man with them.

The man received a swollen ear and a graze to his forehead and was taken to hospital.

The other men involved in the incident are believed to have left the area, heading in the direction of Queens Place - some were on foot and others in the vehicle.

During the incident a member of staff working at Queens Food and Wine Store was also reportedly injured as a shard of glass from one of the bottles caused a cut to his leg.

Officers are investigating the incident and anyone who witnessed what happened, or has any other information about the incident, is asked to contact Hertfordshire Constabulary via the non-emergency number 101, quoting crime reference C1/14/5085.
